Position Summary:
The Ambulatory Nurse utilizes a systematic approach to nursing by incorporating assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the practice of nursing. Provides healthcare to individuals, families, and communities within the RN scope of practice as defined by the Illinois Board of Nursing. The patient population consists of individuals having neck, back, or spine related diagnosis.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
College Diploma Nursing

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse (RN) Illinois and Basic Life Support (BLS). Attend and satisfactorily complete all required continuing education regarding the care of acute stroke patients Encourage completion of ambulatory nursing certification or certificate specific to spine/neurosurgery.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrates clinical competencies in providing direct patient care and patient and family education as well as assisting the provider in the delivery of patient care. Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with others.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides and facilitates competent health care of patients and families in area of practice. Ensures adherence to established standards of care and scope of practice.
  • Performs all essential job functions of Registered Nurse (RN) II.
  • Performs advanced nursing activities, which can include assisting with procedures using local anesthetic, and placement of IV's.
  • Accurately evaluate patient problems in person or by telephone with resolution of the problem through advice, intervention or referral. Triage telephone calls appropriately, returning calls in a timely manner, and keep patients informed of delays in proble
  • Evaluates, assesses, and documents patients' questions or concerns.
  • Ensures documentation of care is complete and accurate.
  • Documents assessment of pain includes presence, characteristics, factors associated with exacerbation of pain and reassessments for relief indicators.
  • Documents education and instructions given.
  • Performs follow up phone contact to assess responses to interventions.
  • Acts as a patient advocate.
  • Provides leadership for initiatives designed to improve the quality of care or clinical outcomes.
  • Acts as preceptor and supports the development of other staff and healthcare students.
  • Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Assists Nursing Supervisor/coordinator in the development of departmental standing orders. Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assess patients in procedural area, both pre and post procedure, review medication, allergies, medical history, and obtain vital signs
  • Initiates IV heplock and/or IV fluids based on protocol
  • Provide education to patients in the post-recovery period
  • Assists Injectionists with procedures (epidural, nerve block, joint injection, radiofrequency nerve ablation, etc)
  • Order, stock, maintain supplies in the area
